Mission & Purpose  Community

History

Our Vision Assist children, youth and families in reaching their God given potential.

Our Mission Vancouver Urban Ministries (VUM) assists lower- income children, youth & families in the communities of Grandview Woodlands and East Vancouver.

Through educational support, social activities for youth, family gatherings, and local events, we contribute to the well-being of the community and show God's love as seen in Jesus Christ.

Our Beliefs The heart of Vancouver Urban Ministries is to help people develop a community of wholeness and hope.

Through these ministries we seek to empower individuals and, where appropriate, engage them in conversations about life and where God is presently working in their lives.

Vancouver Urban Ministries is a grassroots community organization as well as an urban missionary organization. James Lee is called to be a pastor to the community rather than pastor a church congregation.

VUM is looking to attract additional urban missionaries as the needs of the Grandview Woodlands and East Vancouver communities are growing.

The majority of the residents in this area are of Aboriginal descent (60%), followed by residents from immigrant families (30%).

Many are low-income, single parent, households living in subsidized housing.

These families struggle with extreme poverty and the futures of many of the children and youth that we help is considered “at-risk”.

Vancouver Urban Ministries grew out of the need to see more tangible Christian support for lower income families.

2006 - VUM began as a community outreach branch of New Hope Community Services Society.  Quickly, after-school community meals and youth programs developed in partnership with the Salvation Army.

2007 - The Eagle Youth Music School began.

2008 - VUM was incorporated.

2009 - The one-on-one after school therapeutic tutoring program was launched.

2011 - VUM partnered with World Vision Canada's Partnership to End Child Poverty Program. We are looking to develop further programs in these communities through these and other partnerships.
