By talking with the community, VUM has identified 5 ways to enhance the quality of life of low-income and marginalized children, youth & families in East Vancouver Communities
1) Community Cohesion
We offer free family gatherings which feature great food, fun activities, entertainment and a chance for us to get to know our nieghbours.
2) Educational success
We run a therapeutic tutoring program for low-income students with learning disabilities. Children who are ESL also receive help, and a weekly homework club is open to all students in the 2 participating inner-city schools.
|
.3) Access to after-school activities
These activities encourage creativity, sport and recreation. Activities include:
- One-on-one music lessons
- Bi-weekly youth group,
- “Clean Nights Out” for street involved youth &
- Exciting summer events.
4) Physical well-being
VUM provides healthy and hearty meals at our Family Gatherings, along with periodic healthy cooking classes.
In consultation with a nutritionist,
healthy food is provided during all VUM activities.
|
5) Spiritual well-being
VUM offers christian spiritual assistance during events which take place outside of school settings. Pastoral care is also available for families.
As a Urban Missionary Organization, we are committed to meeting the current and future needs of the community. Family camp and parents' support groups are examples of previous VUM ministries. As the needs of the community change, we change to meet those needs.
